Tony Winners Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane Returning to Broadway in It's Only a Play

A producer’s dream team! Tony winners Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick are returning to the Great White Way—together! According to The New York Times, the pair will star in Terrence McNally’s It’s Only a Play, directed by Jack O’Brien. The show will open in September at a theater to be announced later.

The updated incarnation of the comedy will see Broderick playing an anxious playwright trying to get through the opening night of his play, The Golden Egg. Lane will star as his sarcastic friend. It's Only a Play previously appeared off-Broadway at the Manhattan Theater Club in 1986, starring James Coco in Lane’s role.

Lane and Broderick last appeared together on Broadway in The Odd Couple and famously before that in The Producers. Lane most recently starred on the Great White Way in Douglas Carter Beane’s The Nance, for which he received a 2013 Best Actor Tony nomination. A Tony winner for The Producers and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, he received an additional Tony nomination for playing Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls. Broderick last appeared on Broadway in Nice Work If You Can Get It. He won Tony Awards for Brighton Beach Memoirs and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and an additional nomination for The Producers.
